Summary
"African Portraits is a 350-year history of the African-American experience. It begins with life in an idyllic 17th-century West African village and goes on to depict the encroachment of the Europeans, the pillaging and destruction of the village, the capture of its people, their exportation to America chained in the darkened hulls of cargo ships and their sale into slavery. It tells the stories of their lives, and the lives of their descendants, from working in the cotton fields of Texas to playing in the jazz clubs of New York, and how their music -- gospel and spirituals, blues, jazz -- grew from their collective experiences." --from container insert, p.[2]
