Presents Shakespeare's comedy about a creditor demanding a pound of flesh in payment of a defaulted debt and a love who must choose among three caskets in a riddle game to win the hand of a wealthy lady. This Norton Critical Edition includes the full text of the play, plus a "Sources and Context" section that gives special attention to the character of Shylock and the issue of the play's anti-Semitism, the "Criticism" section which collects twenty-one essays of wide-ranging interpretations on various issues including anti-Semitism, postcolonial and race studies, feminist and queer theory, and economic and social organization. Finally, included are a selection of poems, mainly from the 20th century, on the character of Shylock
