Summary
In the 1960s, as the Civil Rights Movement shocks America to its core, Second World War veteran Reggie Atkinson sees his teenage son Lee drawn into the dangerous battle for racial equality -- and fears for him. Twenty years earlier, in an unheard of place called Tuskegee, Alabama, cadet officer Atkinson and his comrades report for pilot training. Those that graduate will be the first African American combat fliers to serve with the United States Army Air Force -- an experiment, unwelcome in much of their native land, contested by many in their government. In the war-torn skies of Adolf Hitler's Fortress Europe they will forge a legend that endures to this day, long after their critics are dead and gone. Some will pay the ultimate price, miles above the earth -- others, expecting to come home as heroes, will find a dreadful welcome waiting. -- page [4] of cover
