As the bellringer, Quasimodo, Lon Chaney is a marvel of makeup and nonverbal expression, shuffling through the streets of medieval Paris, communing with the cathedral gargoyles, dutifully suffering the lash and humiliation for a crime committed against another, expressing a heart-rending love for a beautiful gypsy who naively sees only a cruel military officer as the heroic ideal. Count Orlock (Nosferatu, the vampire) leaves his castle in the Carpathians and travels by ship to Bremen, bringing coffins filled with dirt and plague rats, where he is destroyed by sunlight.
