Summary
"It was one of the most unusual government agencies ever chartered. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) was a response to the Soviet launch of Sputnik. Charged with developing new defense technologies, DARPA had a major role in breakthroughs as diverse as the internet, unmanned probe aircraft, the M-16 rifle and the stealth bomber. The million dollar challenge traces DARPA's 45-year history and highlights five of the agency's most exciting projects, including the Grand Challenge, which offered a million dollar prize for breakthroughs in robotics. Follow the progress of the Carnegie Mellon University's Red Team, which attempted to win the prize, and watch as the robots of the Challenge tackle a 150-mile course across the Mojave desert."--History Channel website
