- Summary
- A biography of the Mexican painter who survived a near-fatal bus accident at the age of eighteen, learned to paint as a form of therapy, had a stormy marriage with Diego Rivera, and became a world-famous artist. Frida Kahlo once said she suffered two serious accidents in her life: the first in 1925 when she was impaled in Mexico City when a streetcar collided with the bus she was riding in; the second was four years later when she married acclaimed muralist Diego Rivera. Both "accidents" inflicted wounds she would suffer from for the rest of her life. Bedridden after the streetcar accident, Kahlo channeled her anguish over her physical condition onto the canvas, painting on a small easel rigged above her bed. Kahlo's stormy marriage to Rivera provided additional material for her small, intensely emotional, and often grotesque paintings. Despite both the physical and emotional pain she felt throughout her life, Kahlo became known for her indomitable spirit and love of life. Kahlo's work initially received little public attention, especially in comparison to Rivera's politically driven murals. In 1938, however, a famous Hollywood star took notice of her paintings while visiting Rivera, and Kahlo had her own one-person show within a year. Kahlo's colorful and vibrant work has appeared in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Louvre, and the homes of the world's elite. Read about the life of this talented painter, and discover the stories behind her colorful and captivating paintings
