Summary
In this final opera of the Ring cycle, Siegfried leaves Breunnhilde and sets off down the Rhine, where he meets Geunther, king of the Gibichung, his sister Gutrune, and their half-brother Hagen, son of Alberich. Conspiring together, the siblings induce Siegfried to drink a magic potion to forget Breunnhilde, then retrieve her so that she may marry Geunther. This deed accomplished, Hagen then murders Siegfried during a hunt. When Breunnhilde sacrifices herself upon Siegfried's pyre, Hagen attempts to steal the magic ring, but is thwarted as the waters of the Rhine rise, washing over everything, and the Rhine maidens retrieve their treasure, as Valhalla appears in flames above
